How could it not work? Tons of people are there scrolling through ads.

Fast forward 3 weeks and these once enthusiastic “marketers” will have significantly less cash (and hair!) if they don’t have a proven approach to converting sales with Facebook Ads.

This also applies to more advertising platforms than Facebook, but Facebook is the best to use as an example.

To understand Facebook ads and what works for converting sales, we first have to start with what people are doing on Facebook...

You already know the answer, and it may seem obvious, but it’s worth highlighting.

They are mindlessly scrolling. Scrolling and scrolling. They should have named it ScrollBook.

On YouTube we scroll, looking at all the stupid thumbnails with people making stupid faces so we will click their video.

Tiktok is so much scrolling I couldn't take it and deleted my account after 3 minutes. 

I’m still debating if I need therapy from that 3 minutes of OMG.

Back to the point.

So, if everyone is scrolling how do we get them to read, let alone notice our ad?

We Use A PATTERN INTERRUPT

This is the secret sauce to halting the endless scroll-fest and grabbing eyeballs.

It's like catching someone mid-yawn with a well-timed joke – unexpected, attention-grabbing, and guaranteed to make them pause for a second.

“Pattern Interrupt” is 2 big words for an attention getting image or video that is designed to get our target audience to STOP for just a split second.

Remember the “Purpose Driven Marketing” approach where everything has a reason or purpose?

For Facebook ads its:

  1. The image or video stops the scroll

  2. The ad copy creates interest and/or curiosity

  3. The button gets the click to your offer (product/sales page).

It’s not rocket science but most people get it wrong.

Facebook is like being in a coffee shop or at an after-party. No one is on Facebook looking for things to buy, they are trying to see what their friends are doing and watching cat videos.

That’s why we have to be particularly focused in getting their attention.

It’s crucial that we get their attention and HOLD it for just a few seconds.

We have to get them to do what we want them to do, which is click our link.

So here’s what we do:

Best Practices for Facebook Ads

So now we know to use an image or video that stops the scroll, write ad copy that is compelling, and use the LEARN MORE button (and a link in the ad copy too).

Never use the SHOP NOW button on Facebook. People are not ready to BUY yet.

Use the LEARN MORE button because they are willing to do that.

When they click your link or button they should land on a page that is “congruent” with the ad they clicked.

Meaning the product should be the same. The images are familiar.

Oversimplification: if you have a baseball in your ad image don't take them to a page selling hockey sticks.

Here’s a copywriting tip for FB ads:

  • Authentic looking posts work.

  • Stories work.

  • Customer testimonials work.

Remember that a good ad by itself isn’t enough to get a sale though. You’ll need to take them on a winning customer journey to get the sale.

Now to the $3M Ad

We know it’s what you’ve been waiting for, so here it is…

We ran this ad for a couple of years a few years ago, but it is still the perfect example of a GREAT FB ad.

(Any ad that is profitable for 2+ years is a great ad).

The product is a fat burner, the target audience is 30-45 year old soccer moms wanting to lose 10 pounds.

We knew from doing a customer survey that the target customer had no time, no energy, carb/sugar cravings, and wanted to lose weight.

(Tip: use surveys to learn objections, challenges, problems, etc. that your product can address)

Since we knew their challenges, we addressed those challenges directly with the ad copy!
