Why SMS Marketing?
More people than ever before are open to receiving text messages from brands. But what does that mean for you?
Klaviyo, in collaboration with Recharge, surveyed 8,781 shoppers globally to uncover the secrets of SMS marketing. Here’s what they found:
Key SMS Marketing Stats in 2024
1. Text Messages Drive Purchases
72% of people have made a purchase after receiving a text from a brand. In Europe, this number is slightly higher at 74%; in APAC, it’s 69%.
86% of respondents made 2+ purchases in the last year from SMS messages, up from 55% in 2022. Within this group, 30% made 4+ purchases, and almost 10% made 6+ purchases.
2. SMS Speeds Up Time to Purchase
65% of people who made an SMS purchase said it was something they were planning to buy soon, but they ended up buying it earlier because of a promotional text. This is up from 60% in 2022.
3. Impulse Buying is on the Rise
14% of respondents made a purchase when they weren’t planning to buy anything at all, thanks to a timely text message.
Growing Your SMS Subscriber List
Here’s how to get more subscribers and keep them engaged:
Discounts: 59% of people are more likely to sign up for SMS if offered a discount.
Conversational SMS: 39% like the ability to ask questions and receive fast responses.
Unique Offers: 38% are drawn to unique products or experiences.
Personalization: 33% appreciate personalized messages.
Human Touch: 31% want to know there’s a real person behind the messages.
Interestingly, 62% of people are more likely to subscribe to SMS after making a purchase, up from 50% in 2022.
So, make sure to offer SMS sign-up options at checkout and in post-purchase email flows.
What Types of SMS Messages Do People Want?
Transactional Messages:
Shipment and delivery confirmations (51%)
Order confirmations (39%)
Back-in-stock notifications

Why People Unsubscribe
To keep your subscribers happy, avoid these common pitfalls:
Sending too many messages (61% unsubscribe for this reason).
Repeating the same message too often (57%).
Sending irrelevant messages (46%).
Integrating SMS with Email
While some people appreciate receiving the same message via both email and SMS, others find it redundant. Here’s how preferences break down:
